Look for return ?? and eggs in mid to late May

We missed the return of this cam; FortisAlberta had a picture of 3 eggs on May 17, so I'm using that for the dates; they are having intruder issues again this year, so we're hoping for the best.
First egg hatched June 13, suggesting it was laid between May 4 and May 9 (35-40 days); if additional eggs hatch, we'll have a better handle on when they might have been laid.

Look for return in late March and eggs in mid to late April

This is beyond sad - everything was looking so good here - all four eggs hatched, even the tiny one was getting fed - life was good. And then the morning of June 3rd, we saw that one of the oldest two chicks had died overnight. The other older chick seemed off-balance and weak June 3rd, and it looked as if #2 died around 6:25 pm. By the morning of June 4, the third chick had also died, leaving only little #4. There is a note saying this may be virus, parasite or bacteria related - and I'm remembering a cat who was very weak after a flea infestation (the medicine we'd given her before leaving for two weeks didn't work) - and this was a healthy adult cat, not a little chick. Keeping fingers crossed for the last chick - but unless something has changed, I'm very worried that he or she won't last beyond the 5 days the older chicks had.
Update June 14 - #4 is almost 2 weeks old and looking great! Still no clue what happened to the other three, but whatever it was, it apparently was less of an issue by the time the 4th egg hatched 3 days later.

Capt. Kidd & Lola - pre-2016
Capt. Kidd (M) and new female Annie

Kidd has a new mate for 2016, we think a young female nesting for the first time; there were at least two females competing for the nest, one of which might have been Lola, but it's hard to be sure until they start spending time on the nest. The new female is a large, strong osprey who will make a good partner for Kidd and protector of their offspring (in time - she still has some things to learn) - but the transition has been hard for those of us who have enjoyed Kidd and Lola's antics over the years.

Look for return in mid to late March and eggs in mid April

This is a new cam for us in 2016.

This pair has some challenges - there is a pair of eagles nesting nearby, and eagles do try to grab fish from osprey - and there are redwing blackbirds nesting nearby which pester the adults on the nest (and might try to grab the chicks if the adults let down their guard). Happily all is going well so far, and I'm keeping fingers crossed.

Look for return by early January and eggs in early to mid March

adults named Pinella (F) and Stirling (M)

Cam was down when third chick hatched so it wasn't seen until Apr 4; I'm guessing it hatched sooner than that.
Everything seemed to be going well through the end of April, and then the cam went down; there were a few reports by local observers, and all three chicks were looking good, though there was some concern about the food supply as the chicks got bigger. Then on Thursday, May 12, local authorities got a report that a chick had fallen out of the nest; they rescued the chick who appeared OK but very skinny and took him/her in for evaluation and treatment; then 20 minutes later a second call arrived, saying another chick had fallen - and that one did not survive. Without a cam, we don't know what happened, but it seems plausible that the largest chick pushed them out of the nest.
As of May 29th, the cam is down for good and we have not been able to get an update on the rescued chick; the remaining chick is doing well, and starting to do lots of flapping. (Don't know which of the two smaller chicks survived the fall.)

2016 will probably be the last year there is a cam here - the person who has been the driving force behind the cam is stepping down, so unless someone comes forward to take over the operation of the organization and the funding for the camera, it won't be back next year.

blue HB/Bierre (M) (for Dr. B - Rob Bierregaard)
blue HC/Eric (M) (for Eric from the camp under the nest)
blue HD/Spirit (F) (to honor so many nests who have lost young this season)

Sad News - on August 1st, an eagle (probably one of the pair that nest nearby) attacked the nest and grabbed one of the chicks, probably Spirit, the youngest (based on observations by those following the nest). A second chick (maybe the oldest one Bierre) flew from the nest and has not been seen, and the third went flat. The chicks were 7-1/2 to 8 weeks old, and very close to fledging - which means the one who flew off may be OK, and may return to the nest - but unfortunately we don't know if the eagles will return, too. Both chicks were lost to eagles last year, on June 26, when they were around 2-1/2 weeks old. Keeping fingers crossed.....
Update August 5 - Little B/Bierre returned safely the morning of August 3rd (he'd been spotted on the mainland 1/4 mile away the day before), and the eagle has not returned; continuing to keep fingers crossed....

I definitely saw 4 eggs on May 10, and there seemed to be a lot of eggs on May 19, but looking at the pictures starting May 25, I can't be sure there were still more than 2 eggs; the lighting and the screen resolution make it very hard to see the eggs on sunny days, and there were days when I'd watch 30-40 minutes and an adult would be brooding the whole time.

adults named Tom and Audrey

Not sure what happened, but there was alarming, and Audrey was away from the nest from around 2 pm on May 5 until 2:48 pm May 6; Tom did a lot of incubating - but the eggs were uncovered for a 7-hour stretch in the rain with the temperature around 50°F.
Amazingly, the first two eggs hatched - and sadly, it looks as if an owl may have attacked the nest around 9:48 pm on May 31, pushing Audrey aside, grabbing or knocking out one of the chicks, and perhaps breaking the remaining egg, which Audrey disposed of a few days later (we could see enough as she did that to know there had been development, though perhaps happily couldn't tell how close the chick was to hatching, so none of the eggs were prevented from developing by the 7 chilly, rainy hours when they weren't incubated). One of the key observers thinks it was the older chick that was taken, and it makes sense that a predator would grab the larger chick if it had the option, so I've listed it as such on the chart.

Note to self - need to find out which one is older, if they know.

Look for return in early to mid April and eggs in late April to early May

adults Iris (named for unusual pattern in eye) & Stanley Louis (M)

Stanley did not return this year; Iris may have mated before laying her first egg but did not have a mate and she appeared to not be tending the egg that much - and it was taken by a raven the next day. She laid a second egg May 2, and seemed to be tending it more carefully, but still did not have a mate; a second osprey was being seen more often about this time, with Iris initially responding as if he was an intruder, but inviting him to mate with her on the nest on May 3rd; this osprey resembled Stan somewhat, but was not him. And later on the 3rd there were 3 other osprey near the nest (did she post "mate wanted" in the personals?).
By the end of the day on May 3rd, one of the suitors had brought Iris a fish, and while the "New Guy" had some coordination issues in the mating department, it seemed that she might have accepted him; and on May 4 he was bringing in sticks, bringing fish and mating - all things Iris (and we) would hope for in a potential mate.
One of the eggs was seen to have a hole in it on May 10, possibly because the new male has a tendency to step on and around the eggs without curling his talons (we do think he is young); he was seen picking at the broken egg, and trying to move it out of the nest.
By May 18, "New Guy" had begun incubating the eggs, and he was named "Louis" in honor of revered Salish elder Louis Adams, who died the day before New Guy appeared.
Two additional eggs appeared damaged and then broke and were removed, on June 5 and 13 (the male is dedicated, but hasn't learn all he needs to learn about moving near eggs); as of June 17, one egg remains; day 40 for the 5th eg is June 21.

We start the 2016 season with likely sad news - the male from this nest was outfitted with a tracking tag and named Gundersen in spring 2015, and we got to follow him on his journey to his winter home in Venezuela; all was going well until the middle of January, when his transmitter stopped sending updates; there's a chance it failed - but it's much more likely that Gundersen has died.

There was no cam in 2015, and I'm not expecting one for 2016, but will keep this nest on my list in case we do get updates from local observers.

I was more or less happily updating my page, and had seen that this cam might not be online this year, but checked, and found that they were recommending a link to an osprey cam in Oregon - so I checked that out, thinking I might add it - and learned that all thee chicks fell out of the nest and died on June 6. I am not going to reseach this nest further - and will just add a "rest in peace" for the little ones I didn't have a chance to know - and perhaps next year we'll add them.

Monty (M) & Glesni (F) (and Monty and Blue 24(F)!)

banded July 1
Blue Z0/Ceri (F)
Blue Z1/Tegid (F)

Very interesting season so far. Blue 24, who has been looking for a nest, arrived first and claimed the nest; male Dai Dot spent some time with her then moved on to his own nest; Monty arrived and mated with her - and then Glesni arrived, and chased her away. But she didn't go far - there's another platform nearby (called Nest2 for clarity), and she and Monty spent some time there (while Monty was also spending time on the primary nest (Nest1) with Glesni) - and Blue 24 eventually laid 3 eggs there, though there was minimal nesting material (Monty was providing food to both females and mating with both females, but only helped prepare the nest he shared with Glesni).
Polygamy is apparently not uncommon among osprey, though it's not often that both nests succeed - and Monty stopped bringing fish to Blue 24 after Glesni laid her second egg, so Blue 24 had to fish for herself while incubating. In another interesting turn of events, another male apparently successfully took over Dai Dot's nest, and Dai Dot was seen back at Dyfi, where Monty escorted him away from both nests - but perhaps Blue24's nest is far enough from Monty's that Blue 24 and Dai Dot could nest there in the future.
Sad news - shortly before midnight on July 14, Ceri fell from her perch on a branch near the nest (her first night on a branch) and spent 12 hours in the tall grass under the perch; she was able to lift off from the tall grass a bit before noon, and flew back to the perch - and two hours later Tegid (who just fledged the day before) knocked her off the perch; she flew well back to the nest, but did not show any interest in subsequent feedings and seemed to spend most of her time standing in the nest with her head drooping; she seemed to rally after a couple of days, and look more alert - but didn't eat food that was offered; she died shortly before midnight on July 20th. Her body was removed a few days later and as of July 24, we're waiting for results from the necropsy.

Not sure what it is about the Welsh nests this year, but there's a bit of strange behavior here as well. All was going well when a banded osprey dropped by - and it turned out to be 2R/Clarach, a 2013 chick from Dyfi, and the first Dyfi chick to be seen back in Wales! That's not unusual, but the part where she's hanging around the nest, occasionally on the nest with the resident female, and competing for fish - that's unusual. I think the folks monitoring the nest at Glaslyn are happy she's back in Wales - and wish she'd find another part of Wales to spend her time!
And if that wasn't enough, Aran was initially splitting his time between this nest and female Blue 5F (from Rutland), a situation which apparently happens when there is a shortage of males and nests in close proximity; I'm not sure if Blue 5F laid any eggs, but do know that Aran focused on this nest.
